hair help! [17 May 2009|11:38pm]
Alright, I'm seeking a new hairstyle. Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to give me suggestions in the form of PICTURES OF HAIRSTYLES. You can post 'em here or e-mail them to me. Once I've gotten enough, I might put it to a vote. haha We'll see. I'd like something that's relatively low maintenance and it needs to be professional enough to be, well, professional. :) Here's pictures I just took. You may recognise this haircut as being the same one I've had for the past, uh, 15+ years. Yeah. Pictures are below the cut.

On Vox: 'Taken' [07 Feb 2009|10:56am]

I thought 'Taken' was pretty awesome. Realistic? No. But it's action-packed and Liam Neeson KICKS ASS in that movie, and sometimes you just want to see that.

And the Cowboys got KILLED (yes, bold and all caps 'killed') by the Eagles! AND Favre and the Jets lost to the Dolphins.

What an awesome bunch of games today. :)

On Vox: To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven [22 Dec 2008|09:44pm]

My grandpa (Dad's dad) passed away today.

(I'm posting this for those of you who don't follow me on Twitter. For those that do, I'm still going to try to make a more expansive post about this.) Thank you to all of you who have offered your condolences, prayers, and general friendship.

On Vox: Huh. [24 Nov 2008|09:44am]

I suppose we have the FDA to thank for this, but I find it interesting that on a can of Sprite Zero (and, presumably, other calorie-free sodas, though I never noticed before) it says:

LOW CALORIE
VERY LOW SODIUM

And then under Nutrition Facts:

Calories   0

Sodium   35mg   1%

So... 0 is 'low' but 35 is 'very low'. Ooookeydokey.

So, I was trying to think of a word. I came up with the word 'consistent' but that wasn't quite it, even though it's probably a synonym for it. I was trying to think of places you might use the word, or things it might be used to describe. 'Oh', I thought, 'dress codes! Like at schools where they have to wear a uniform.' Then I thought, 'Well, why do they wear uniforms? They wear them so they can look consistent and... and...... oh.'

Uniform.

Heh.

On Vox: Time to make a post [02 Nov 2008|12:18pm]

So my dad has had knee problems for... ever. My whole life, anyway. Multiple knee surgeries, a partial knee or something similar on one knee (plastic parts, a fake kneecap, etc.), etc.

Finally something went *pop* about 6 weeks ago or so, and he was in excruciating pain. They said it was time for a total knee -- he knew that was coming but they'd been trying to hold off as long as possible due to his age. (He's 59, and if you get one in your 50s, you'll need it done again if you live to your 70s or whatever.)

So they got him on the schedule for December, the soonest they could fit him in. Long story short, they had a cancellation and could do it on 30 October.

So, last Thursday, he had his operation. It went well. The last knee surgery he had, probably 10-15 years ago, he had some kind of problem with the anesthesia and almost died on the operating table. This time, no such problems.

However, he's having post-surgery problems now. He has a fever over 100 (101 today, down from 103 overnight), his blood count (I'm hearing this third-hand, so I'm not sure what 'blood count' means -- white cells, red cells, platelets, what) is low and he may need a transfusion. This is in addition to the fever which probably indicates an infection. Plus he's been itching like crazy as an allergic reaction to one of the three pain killers he's on -- and since he's on three, they don't know which one makes him itch. Obviously at this point, that's the least of their concerns. Wha'ts itching compared to a high fever and infection, and a possible blood transfusion, right?

Please pray for him, and for my mom who is not dealing with this well at all (she has her own health issues, both physical and mental), and my sister who has to try to help my mom help my dad while also dealing with her own stuff, too. Prayers needed all around, please.

I guess I'm not even going to get into my grandpa (Dad's dad) who just went through two surgeries, the second of which almost killed him. I think he's doing okay now. But if you want to pray for him and my grandma and everyone down in SoCal helping support them, that'd be great. :)

Update: Doctor says no transfusion will be needed. So, as soon as they fever is taken care of, he gets to go home! Thanks for all your prayers (and good thoughts :D).

On Vox: Today's todo [18 Oct 2008|08:57am]

Because everyone cares.

  1. Get the oil changed in my car
  2. Counseling appointment (10-10:50am)
  3. Get tags for car renewed before they close at noon
  4. Check PO box
  5. Put more seed & straw down on the lawn
  6. Get the grass out of the mulch. Bad grass, bad! Grow elsewhere!
  7. Take the allium bulbs to the basement -- it hasn't been cold enough for long enough to plant them yet

Hmm. It doesn't look as bad on 'paper' as it will actually turn out to be. It's numbers five and six that will be the most time-consuming. Especially six.

I've been with my web host for over 6 years now. Wow. No wonder I'm getting the itch to switch. Not quite the 7 year itch, but this is computer years, so I'm actually way late! ;)

On Vox: MNF [13 Oct 2008|03:36pm]

From TVGuide.com's synopsis of tonight's Monday Night Football game:

"New York Giants (4-0) at Cleveland (1-3) in the Browns' first MNF appearance since 2003."

They might as well have added, "And their last MNF appearance until 2013."

I know that as a Niner fan, I have no room to talk. But still. ;)

Interesting that Google chose to go with Paddington Bear's 50th birthday as their Google doodle today, instead of Columbus Day. (Maybe they did it yesterday -- the 'real' Columbus Day -- and I missed it...? Doesn't look like it, though.)

On Vox: Tracey [12 Oct 2008|05:23pm]

I used to post funny things that Tracey said all the time, but I haven't done it in awhile. Here's the latest one, though:

Tracey: Maybe they're there today to register. You think?
Me: I think all the time. I can't stop. And you can't seem to start!
Tracey: Start what?

On Vox: Quick life update [19 Sep 2008|10:47am]

Since I have time on my hands, here's a brief update on life.

  • I've been playing tennis with Lizzy almost every evening, now that the weather is so nice and we have 'our own' tennis courts where we live. Last night was the first time anyone else was actually on the courts besides us!
  • I've read a tonne over books over the summer. (I always list them in my Vox library, if anyone cares. I do it for my own reference so I can see what I've read, because I read so much and forget so quickly.)  I only have a few more to go and then I'll be 'done' until next summer, most likely.
  • The 'Twilight' series (Stephenie Meyer) was really good and definitely sucked me in. 'The Host' did not suck me in, and yet when all was said and done... it might even be better than Twilight. Maybe. :)  I've found out it's going to be a series, too!
  • Still no power in many places in Louisville, though they're reporting now that only 108,000 or so are left without power. Only.
  • Louisville (UofL) might not be as terrible at football this year as I'd feared. Maybe. I guess it depends which Cantwell shows up, and if Anderson (176 yards, 3 TDs against Kansas State) can keep it up. The Big East is really weak this year, aside from South Florida. There haven't been any conference games yet, though.
  • Looking forward to Ubuntu 8.10 on 30 October
  • Looking even more forward to (hopefully) my new phone on 19 October
  • Which reminds me, I'm now a Sprint Premier customer, a VIP. I get special perks because I've been with Sprint for 10 years now. This VIP thing has only been around since the end of last year.
  • Exactly five weeks until my birthday. Wow, I didn't even know it fell on a Friday this year!
  • I did know, however, that Christmas falls on a Thursday this year. I've already asked off for that Wednesday and Friday, to give me a five-day weekend.
  • Now's a good time to plug the Envail Wishlist.
  • And a good time to offer up the services of EnvailMail again.
  • The new Weezer album is pretty good. The new Staind album is even better. Neither are great.
